Yoink! Nausicaa in Large Format Paperbacks
Ordered these from my fave local comics store a few weeks ago and picked them up yesterday. This is Miyazaki's most fully-realized world, and one that would make an incredible RPG setting. The new editions come with fold-out color maps and posters. It's clear from the loving details of the political and military maps that Miyazaki loved the world-building aspects as much as the storytelling. There are even color drawings of the life cycles of the flora of the toxic jungle. If you've never read Nausicaa or seen the film, I can't recommend them highly enough to you as inspiration.

ReplyDeleteThese are indeed great stories with amazing artwork. The movie was alright but the books are amazing.
ReplyDeleteI remember first seeing this movie back in the 90s when it was called Wind Warriors and made absolutely no sense at all. It was still a remarkable film, utterly unlike anything. I think I'll add the Toxic Jungle to my world as an homage.
ReplyDeleteSee if you can get the current released version. The Wind Warriors version was a heavily cut version of the original film.

ReplyDeleteLotta love out there for Nausicaa, great to read everyone's take on it. If I were asked to describe it in terms of RPGs already out there, I might say "Gamma World + Crimson Skies + Empire of the Petal Throne." Not a bad pedigree!
DeleteNah...I'll stick to my claim of a science fiction masterpiece, up there with Stapledon.
